A generative grammar approach to diatonic harmonic structure
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper aims to give a hierarchical, generative account of diatonic harmony progressions and proposes a generative phrase-structure grammar. The formalism accounts for structural properties of key, functional, scale and surface level. Being related to linguistic approaches in generative syntax and to the hierarchical account of tonality in the generative theory of tonal music (GTTM) [1], cadence-based harmony contexts and its elaborations are formalised. This approach covers cases of modulation, tonicisation and some aspects of large-scale harmonic form, and may be applied to large sets of diatonic compositions. Potential applications may rise in computational harmonic and corpus analysis, as well as in the music psychological investigation of tonal cognition.1

Towards a generative syntax of tonal harmony
This paper aims to propose a hierarchical, generative account of diatonic harmonic progressions and suggest a set of phrase-structure grammar rules. It argues that the structure of harmonic progressions exceeds the simplicity of the Markovian transition tables and proposes a set of rules to account for harmonic progressions with respect to key structure, functional and scale degree features as ...
متن کاملOn the Emergence of Scientific Grammar in Iran
Writing the grammar of a language is one of the most significant outputs of linguistic studies. In Iran, it is Avicenna (Ibn-e Sina) who is credited with the first such compilation of the Persian language. Understanding the weaknesses associated with the traditional trends of grammar writing in Iran, contemporary Iranian linguists adopted the modern Western approach following the Chomskyan Turn...
متن کاملModeling Harmonic Similarity Using a Generative Grammar of Tonal Harmony
In this paper we investigate a new approach to the similarity of tonal harmony. We create a fully functional remodeling of an earlier version of Rohrmeier’s grammar of harmony. With this grammar an automatic harmonic analysis of a sequence of symbolic chord labels is obtained in the form of a parse tree. The harmonic similarity is determined by finding and examining the largest labeled common e...
متن کاملFunction- and Rhythm-Aware Melody Harmonization Based on Tree-Structured Parsing and Split-Merge Sampling of Chord Sequences
This paper presents an automatic harmonization method that, for a given melody (sequence of musical notes), generates a sequence of chord symbols in the style of existing data. A typical way is to use hidden Markov models (HMMs) that represent chord transitions on a regular grid (e.g., bar or beat grid). This approach, however, cannot explicitly describe the rhythms, harmonic functions (e.g., t...
متن کاملGenerating Music Using Concepts from Schenkerian Analysis and Chord Spaces
Music demonstrates structure at many levels. This structure can be found in tonalities as well as in temporal aspects of the music. However, many approaches to algorithmic composition neglect the structure at one of these levels, either requiring existing musical fragments as input or not imposing sufficient global structure. The results of these algorithms have a disorganized or random sound [...
